Peas Greenfeast

R14 - R44
INFORMATION

Description

Peas Greenfeast (Pisum sativum) is a popular shelling pea variety prized for its succulent, sweet peas and vigorous growth. It produces heavy yields of plump pods, each containing up to 8 tender, flavourful peas, ideal for fresh eating, freezing, or cooking.

This variety is a cool-season crop, making it perfectly suited for autumn to early spring planting in most South African regions, particularly where winters are mild and frost-free. Greenfeast grows up to 90 cm tall and may benefit from light staking or support, though it is also manageable as a bush-type in smaller spaces.

Fast-growing and low-maintenance, this heirloom pea offers high productivity, excellent disease resistance, and is a great choice for home gardens, schools, or community plots.

Benefits

Companion Planting

  • Helps fix nitrogen in the soil, benefiting neighbouring leafy greens.

Pollinator & Insectary

  • While self-pollinating, pea flowers may attract bumblebees and other small pollinators.
  • Legumes and peas contribute to improved soil biodiversity and encourage beneficial soil microbes.

Culinary and Garden Value

  • Excellent in soups, stews, stir-fries, or eaten fresh.
  • Young shoots (pea tips) are edible and popular in salads or as garnish.
  • Great for small-space or vertical gardens when grown with support.

Nutritional and Medicinal

  • High in plant-based protein, vitamin C, fibre, and B-vitamins – supports energy production and immune health.
  • Contains antioxidants and phytonutrients that may reduce inflammation.
  • Low in fat and calories – excellent for heart health and digestive support.

How To Use

Peas Greenfeast flourishes under the following conditions:

  • Season: Summer to Autumn
  • Temperature: 15-20°C
  • Germinate: 7-14 days
  • Depth: 10 mm
  • Spacing: 5x60 cm
  • Harvest: 60-120 days
  • Height: Up to 90 cm
  • Flowering Season: Late winter to spring
  • Exposure: Full sun (6+ hours daily)

Ideal Growing Environment

  • Well-drained, soil with added compost and nutrition; pH 6.0–7.5.
  • Regular but moderate; avoid water logging. Deep water weekly in dry areas.
  • Not heavy feeders; avoid nitrogen-rich fertilisers. Use compost or seaweed extract.
  • Prefers cooler temperatures, ideal for temperate regions or higher elevations.
  • Best in moderate humidity (50–70%) with good air circulation to avoid mildew.
  • Requires trellising or support. Harvest regularly to encourage continued pod formation.
  • Benefits from being planted alongside carrots, turnips, radishes, cucumbers, corn, beans, and mint.
  • Intercropping: Pair with tomatoes, capsicums, broccoli, or lettuce.
  • Crop Rotation: Plant after heavy feeders (tomatoes, broccoli). Follow with carrots or lettuce.
  • Soil Rejuvenation: Till in as green manure between cycles to enrich soil.
  • Avoid planting with onions, garlic, leeks, and chives – they can stunt pea growth.
