Jiffy Microgreen Tray & Plate

R45 - R49
INFORMATION

Introduction

Growing microgreen are made super easy with the new Microgreen Trays and Microgreen Plate produced by Jiffy.

The tailored microgreen plate is a QSM (Quick Soil Media) made from cocopeat without any fertilizer or wetting agents. The coco plates are washed, buffered and ready to use, according to RHP standards.

The plate fits in trays that are made from 100% recycled plastic in accordance to the ISO 9001 standards and can be reused multiple times.

Trays have drainage holes but once the coco plank is expanded it holds significant water and very little additional water is needed for germination. Once germinated, watering needs to be more frequent.

We have two microgreen tray variants we stock:

  • With drainage holes
  • Without drainage holes

What Are Microgreens?

Microgreens are young vegetables, considered as baby plants, falling somewhere between a sprout and baby green that are approximately 2.5–7.5 cm tall.

Why Grow Microgreens?

Microgreens offer up to 40% more nutrition than any fully grown vegetables, and provides so much more flavor to your meals.  Microgreens are filled with vitamins, anti-oxidants and numerous other health benefits. Microgreens can be grown indoors, on a kitchen top/counter or window balcony, with very little water and no added chemicals.

Microgreen nutrient contents vary slightly, most varieties tend to be rich in potassium, zinc, iron, copper and magnesium.

Microgreens can be added to a wide variety of food products including salads, meat, smoothies, sandwiches and numerous other food recipes.

Microgreens are usually harvested 7–21 days after germination, once the plant’s first true leaves have fully emerged.

How to use

What you’ll need

  • Microgreen tray.
    • Recommended to use the tray without drainage holes as the bottom tray and the tray with drainage wholes as the top tray.
    • Allows for easy watering and prevents from having a constant wet top soil which could lead to problems.
  • Good-quality seeds.
  • A good growing medium, such as the coco growing plate specifically designed for growing microgreens, soil, homemade compost or seedling starter.
  • Proper lighting for the microgreens — either use indirect sunlight or T5 lighting, ideally for at least 14–18 hours per day.

Instructions

  • Fill your container with your chosen media, make sure you don’t over-compress it.
  • The plates are easy to use, simply place in the tray and hydrate until fully expanded and you are ready to sow. Excess water will drain out through the holes in the base of the tray.
  • Sow your seeds.
  • Lightly mist your seeds with water and cover with a lid if possible - maintain a 60% to 80% humidity.
  • Check on your microgreen tray daily and mist with water as needed to keep the relative humidity high
  • A couple of days after your seeds have germinated, you can remove the cover and slightly increase the light - maintain a minimum of 60% relative humidity.
  • Water once a day while your microgreens grow.
  • After 7–21 days, your microgreens should be ready to harvest.

Recommendation: When using a microgreen tray with drainage holes make sure to place something underneath to catch all the excess water.
