Description
Hydrogen peroxide is one of the most effective and cost effective ways to sterilize your grow room, equipment and the surrounding growing area without leaving traces of residue. It also helps to prevent bacteria and harmful pathogens like fusarium, pythium and some other unwanted diseases from growing in your hydroponic system.
Hydrogen Peroxide (H2o2) is an extremely powerful cleaning agent, the substance naturally occurs in a gaseous form in the air we breathe (not enough to harm us though.) Hydrogen peroxide is the simplest peroxide (water with an extra oxygen–oxygen single bond).
How to use
Sterilization of equipment & growing environment
- This is advised before, during and after any of your grows. This will ensure that the growing environment remains sterile and does not encourage any unwanted pests, bacteria or fungus, like powdery mildew. Mix 50ml per L for the cleaning solution.
Bud washing
- This is a practice used to clean buds before the delicate curing process. When growing outdoors, it is common to find dust, ash, small pests, pollen and even mold spores in your flower. Hydrogen peroxide 50% should be diluted at 0.7ml per L for the bud washing solution.
- Example steps:
-
Clean three approx. 20L buckets and fill them up with clean water.
- In the first 20L bucket add 15ml hydrogen peroxide.
-
Collect your plant material. Keep the cannabis branches as large as possible, but short enough to fit completely inside the buckets.
-
Optional: remove large fan leaves before washing.
-
Dunk, swirl, and rapidly wiggle the cannabis in the first wash bucket for about 30/60 seconds. Then hold it up over the bucket to drip off excess liquid and give it a few shakes.
-
Next, submerge and swirl the branches in the second bucket to rinse, then rinse one final time in the 3rd clean bucket of water. 15 seconds in each rinse bucket is adequate.
-
Shake out then hang the washed cannabis branches. For the best quality, choose a dark, cool and well-ventilated room. For smaller branches or buds, consider using an herb drying rack.
-
Finally, proceed with drying and curing the cannabis as you normally would.
Please store in a dark room, light will slowly degrade the hydrogen peroxide.
Warning!
Always use protective gloves when handling 50% hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizer (moderate oxidizer in lower concentrations), and can be corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. This chemical can cause burns to the skin and tissue damage to the eyes.
Take special caution to avoid contact with hydrogen peroxide mist.
Have ventilation in the room when you are sterilizing with hydrogen peroxide, the fumes can 'burn' your nose in a non ventilated room.
Due to these potential hazards, hydrogen peroxide should always be handled with care.
Rinse with water right away if contact is made.
